Local media cites police sources as saying that 11 police officers and two security chiefs have been killed in Mexico’s southern Guerrero state.

Just west of the Pacific resort of Acapulco, an unidentified group of gunmen ambushed a security patrol.

The newspaper El Universal reports that some of the victims of Monday’s attack were handcuffed before being shot.

Trafficking in drugs has been a major cause of violence in Guerrero.

Along the Pacific corridor, several groups are fighting for control of lucrative drug routes.

Additionally, the region is known for the production of heroin and opium poppies.

There was a shooting last year that led to the death of the mayor of a small town in Guerrero.

Authorities blamed a criminal gang linked to a drug cartel for that attack.
