During the build-up to their 2019 victory, England played 88 one-day internationals, compared to 42 during the 2023 World Cup.

The Hundred is played at the same time as the domestic 50-over competition in English cricket.

England would have benefited from more ODIs in India since 2019.

The former Test captain and batter said, “I don’t think we can use it as an excuse.”.

“We’re an experienced group of players who have played together a lot.

“But it would have been nice to have had a natural run in rather than just a rushed block of eight to ten games.”

To qualify for the semi-finals, England will likely have to win all five of their remaining group games after suffering three defeats in four games at the start of their World Cup defence.

In September, they played a four-match series against New Zealand at home. The travelling party did not play in any of the three matches against Ireland that followed.

As the Ashes dominated the summer, England’s 50-over side last played Bangladesh in early March in a three-match series.

A few first-team players, including Root, who instead played in the T20 league in the United Arab Emirates, were absent for the three matches in South Africa in January.
