Storm Babet strikes across Scotland

Storm Babet brought torrential rain to parts of Scotland, flooding homes. Rescue teams have been helping people escape their homes.

The search for a driver trapped by floodwater overnight in Aberdeenshire is ongoing.

An Angus woman’s body was recovered on Thursday after being swept into a river.

Flooding has affected Brechin in Angus to a great extent.

People were helped to safety by rescue teams that went door-to-door by torchlight during the night.

The Angus Council said it was still responding to more than 100 calls from people who remained in their homes despite evacuation warnings.

The town’s flood defences were overwhelmed at about 04:00, as the river levels rose by 4.4 meters (14 feet).

There were fears that the banks of the River South Esk would burst, so the council had earlier advised residents to evacuate about 400 homes.

A rest center received more than 40 people in soaked clothes during the night. The council appealed for local people to donate clothing.

Winds of up to 70mph, torrential rain and heavy flooding have accompanied the storm, which prompted a rare “threat to life” red weather warning in parts of eastern Scotland.

Multi-agency search operations are underway in Aberdeenshire after reports that a man was trapped in a vehicle by floodwater near Marykirk at 03:00. Area residents are urged to stay away from the area.

A 57-year-old woman was found dead in Glen Esk on Thursday after being swept into the Water of Lee.

According to Police Scotland, there were no suspicious circumstances and a report would be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
