Tesla’s Elon Musk announced on Friday that X, the social media service formerly known as Twitter, will launch two new tiers of subscriptions.

Musk said there will be a lower-cost tier with all features and no reduction in ads, and a higher-cost tier with no ads.

According to X, the initiative is part of a program designed to combat spam and bot activity. In New Zealand and the Philippines, users will be charged $1 a year to “post & interact with other posts.” Users who opt out will only be able to read posts.

Musk is referring to two new subscription tiers, one of which is the $1 annual subscription.

The social media company already offers a subscription service called X Premium for $8 per month. Those who sign up for this can get the blue checkmark on their accounts, as well as edit posts.

The blue checkmark has been removed from non-paying accounts since Musk took over Twitter in October 2022 and rebranded it to X. Users could identify authentic accounts belonging to public figures by the blue checkmark. A number of previously banned accounts have also been reinstated on the platform by Musk.

Advertisers have been scared off by those changes. Musk said in July that X’s cash flow remains negative because of a nearly 50% drop in advertising revenue coupled with “heavy debt.”

A new subscription could improve the company’s finances and open up new revenue streams.

The X platform faces competition from less mature players such as Meta’s Threads and Bluesky.
