EU ministers have urged member states to do more to screen migrants and expel those regarded as a security risk, amid rising concerns over militant attacks.

A teacher in France and two Swedish nationals in Brussels were murdered by suspected Islamists days before the meeting between interior and justice ministers.

As a result of the Israeli-Hamas conflict, police across Europe are on high alert.

In France, President Emmanuel Macron attended the funeral of a teacher who was fatally stabbed at a school last week.

Dominique Bernard, who was 57, was buried in the northern city of Arras.

Posthumously, France’s highest civilian decoration, the Legion of Honour, was awarded to the literature teacher and father of three.

Several staff members attempted to tackle the attacker, including Dominique Bernard. There were also serious injuries to a teacher and a security guard.

“He was sensitive and quiet. He didn’t like the noise and fury of the world,” Bernard’s wife Isabelle, a teacher herself, said.

The suspect, identified as Mohamed Mogouchkov, is a Russian of Chechen descent. Eyewitnesses reported that he shouted “Allahu Akbar”, or “God is greatest,” during last Friday’s attack.

As a result of his arrest, he faces charges of murder and terrorism.

It was known to security services that Mohamed Mogouchkov was involved in terrorism. According to reports, his extremist language alarmed teachers at the school when he was a student there.

He has also had several members of his family arrested, including a brother aged 17, his mother, a sister, and an uncle.
