Apple announced Tuesday that it will launch the $79 Apple Pencil with a USB-C charging port in November. Charges were made by plugging the pencil into the iPad’s charging port in previous models.

With its low price and compatibility with all USB-C iPads, it is the cheapest Apple Pencil so far, but it lacks some of the more expensive Apple Pencils’ features.

As an example, it can attach magnetically to USB-C iPads, but it cannot charge wirelessly like the $129 second-generation Apple Pencil. Furthermore, it lacks pressure sensitivity, which is present in the older $99 Apple Pencil, making it more suitable for people who just need to take notes rather than digital artists.

Earlier this month, Apple released the iPhone 15 lineup, which has a USB-C charging port instead of a Lightning port. According to European Union law, the company said last year it would switch to the common charging standard.
