Coach Matthew Mott says England are low in confidence but he will not “throw the baby out with the bathwater” after their poor start at the World Cup.

After losing their first three matches, the defending champions were stunned on Sunday by Afghanistan.

To reach the semi-finals, they will likely need to win all five of their remaining games, including Saturday’s match against in-form South Africa.

According to Mott, there will be no wholesale changes.

“We’ll always look at minor tweaks, but I won’t throw the baby out with the bathwater after a few bad performances.”

The English were poor with the ball during the first powerplay against Afghanistan, conceding the most runs of any side in the tournament to date, and then were poor with the bat in being bowled out for 215.

During their opening defeat by New Zealand, they struggled to 282-9 before the Black Caps raced to the target in 36.2 overs.

The two things that we’re probably lacking are confidence, which this team has been known for over a long period of time, and going out there and really taking the game on.

As for our general attitude, it’s just our ability to do the little things – bowl in those partnerships when we’re bleeding from one end – and then be a bit braver with the bat.

As a team, we pride ourselves on putting the opposition under pressure, and we’ve been reactive in those two games, so we need to turn that around quickly.”

One of the players who has struggled the most is all-rounder Chris Woakes. In 11 overs so far with the new ball, the seamer has conceded 95 runs, leading England’s pace attack for eight years.

However, Mott believes the 34-year-old will regain his form during the tournament.
