India demolish Pakistan in Ahmedabad

As Pakistan reached 155-2 in the cauldron of the world’s largest cricket stadium, they looked poised to challenge the hosts. The hosts have never beaten Pakistan in a men’s 50-over World Cup.

The result was an implosion. After Babar Azam was bowled by Mohammed Siraj for 50, Pakistan collapsed to 191 all out after losing eight wickets for 36 runs. Five Indian bowlers picked up two wickets, including Siraj.

The target looked so unlikely to trouble India’s powerful batting line-up. Rohit Sharma batted magnificently for 86, putting the result beyond doubt despite both Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli being out for 16.

The victory was sealed with almost 20 overs to spare after Rohit and Shreyas Iyer shared 77 for the third wicket. Shreyas Iyer ended on 53 not out.

This is India’s third victory in three games at this year’s World Cup, a run that dates back to 1992. Upon meeting Bangladesh on Thursday, they will join New Zealand at the top of the group table.

In the context of such a meek performance against their fiercest rivals, Pakistan’s loss will be nothing. On Friday, they will play Australia in Bengaluru. Group stage of the tournament was billed as the highlight as always. For some, it is even more important than the final. There was an added element to this particular match between India and Pakistan since none of the Pakistan XI had played in India before. After Siraj kept one low en route to Babar’s off stump, India and their supporters became increasingly concerned.
