A bomb attack by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in central Butambala district was foiled by Ugandan police, Yoweri Museveni said.

Islamic State-linked militants planned to bomb two churches in Kibibi, about 50 km (30 miles) from Kampala, according to X, formerly Twitter.

The devices were reported to the police and defused, he said.

According to the president, the bombs were disguised as address systems and given to local pastors. He said vigilant members of the public reported them.

Ugandan forces conducted air strikes against four ADF positions in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo, Museveni announced earlier.

“Quite a few terrorists have been killed,” the president said.

He warned that the escaping ADF are reentering Uganda and perpetrating random acts of terrorism.

In western Uganda, ADF militants killed 42 people in June, including 37 students at a high school near the DR Congo border.

In the history of the ADF, this was one of the deadliest attacks.
