Demonstrations in support of the Palestinian cause have been banned by the French government.

Emmanuel Macron called for unity while Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin warned foreign nationals who break the rules would be deported “systematically.”

During the war between Israel and Hamas, European governments are fearful that anti-Semitism will rise.

The ban did not stop a large number of pro-Palestinian demonstrators from protesting in Paris on Thursday.

Ten arrests were made and water cannons were used to disperse the 3,000-strong rally at Place de la République, where protesters chanted “Israel murderer” and “Palestine will win.”

The ban’s author, Mr Darmanin, said those who defy it should be arrested because they are capable of disrupting public order.

Pro-Palestinian groups said it risked threatening freedom of expression and promised to continue supporting the Palestinian cause.

Charlotte Vautier, who attended the rally, told Reuters News Agency, “We live in a country of civil law. We have the right to protest.”.

Pro-Palestinian demonstrations have also been banned in Berlin’s capital, citing antisemitic statements and glorification of violence.

On Thursday, around 60 demonstrators complied with an order to leave Potsdamer Platz.
