Protesters replaced an Israeli flag flying above Sheffield Town Hall with a Palestinian flag, after scaling the building during a demonstration.

A man can be seen climbing across the roof to remove the banner before throwing it to a crowd of people below in a video shared on social media.

Two men allegedly scaled the building on Tuesday evening, South Yorkshire Police said in a statement.

According to the force, no arrests had been made, and investigations were ongoing.

Sheffield Online shared footage of people cheering and shouting “take it down” as the Israeli flag was lowered.

In the course of the “minor disorder,” officers attempted to disperse crowds, with two suspects “fleeing the scene”.

It happened three days after Hamas – the Palestinian militant group – attacked Israel in a surprise attack from Gaza.

Over 900 people have been killed in retaliatory Israeli air strikes on Gaza, while the death toll in Israel has reached 1,200.

The leader of Sheffield City Council, Tom Hunt, said: “Everyone has the right to protest in a safe and peaceful manner, but we cannot support the events outside Sheffield’s Town Hall.”.

There is a serious danger posed by protesters to themselves and others.”

Local authorities were requested by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities to consider flying the Israeli flag, the council said.
