As reported by the AFP news agency, Sunday Igboho Adeyemo, who campaigned for an independent Yoruba nation in Nigeria, was freed from detention in Benin after fleeing Nigeria in 2021.

He has been freed and has left Benin, attorney Ibrahim Salami told AFP. The Benin authorities did not comment.

When Adeyemo called for the creation of an independent Yoruba republic on October 2020, he gained some notoriety in Nigeria, although he was widely ridiculed for the idea.

However, he later became a lightning rod for land rights grievances.

After authorities raided his home in Ibadan in 2021, he fled Nigeria.

Benin was then asked to detain him by Nigeria.

In a social media video, Adeyemo thanked Benin’s President Patrice Talon.
