At the China Open, Coco Gauff extended her winning streak to 16 matches to reach the semi-finals against Iga Swiatek.

6-2 6-4, the 19-year-old American beat Greek sixth seed Maria Sakkari in Beijing to win her first major title.

Swiatek, ranked second in the rankings, fought back from the brink of defeat against Caroline Garcia to face the world number three.

Despite being two points away from victory, Garcia lost 6-7 (8-10) 7-6 (7-5) 6-1.

Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka faces Elena Rybakina for a place in the last four, where she could meet Jelena Ostapenko or Liudmila Samsonova.

She hasn’t lost since 11 August, when she lost in the quarter-finals of the Canadian Open to Jessica Pegula. Gauff’s winning streak is the longest on the WTA Tour in 2023.

Following a first-round exit at Wimbledon, she won 21 of 22 matches since then, including her first WTA 1,000 title in Cincinnati and her maiden Grand Slam in New York.

Despite not losing a single serve, Gauff took only one hour and 20 minutes to move past Sakkari.

Sabalenka replaced Swiatek as world number one following the Belarusian’s run to the US Open final.

It took Garcia four points to tied the second-set tie-break at 5-5 after the 22-year-old four-time major winner held her nerve.

The next two points were won by Swiatek, forcing a decider, which, unlike the first two sets, turned out to be a one-sided affair.
