Biden vows to stand by Ukraine despite budget fiasco
Despite averting a government shutdown, the temporary measure failed to include $6bn (£4.92bn) in military aid for Kyiv.
Several Republicans openly oppose Mr Biden’s approach to the war, including hardline Republicans.
However, Mr Biden said on Sunday that Ukraine could “count on” US support.
Mr Biden said US support for Ukraine cannot be interrupted under any circumstances.
Upon restoring funding for the war, he said, “I can assure [Ukraine] we’ll get there.” He added, “You can count on our support; we will not abandon you.”
In February 2022, the US provided $46 billion (£37 billion) in military aid to Ukraine.
Another $24 billion (£19 billion) has been requested by President Biden.
Recently, the US has sent long-range missiles and Abrams tanks to Kyiv. In the south of the country, Kyiv’s forces continue to launch a slow-moving counteroffensive. Nevertheless, Saturday’s temporary budget agreement – which will fund the US federal government for 45 days – stripped out continued military funding.
Senior Senate leaders from both parties released a joint statement pledging to “ensure the US government continues to provide” support to Ukraine.
In recent months, hard-right Republicans in the House of Representatives have increasingly opposed the war, as President Volodymyr Zelensky did nine days before the move.
The House of Representatives is controlled by Republicans, while the Senate is controlled by Democrats.
