Ashes star Ashes made 158 from 153 balls, hitting three sixes, before being caught and bowled by Calvin Harrison, Notts’ most potent bowler with his 2-103.

At stumps, Daniel Bell-Drummond was Kent’s highest scorer with 60, while Jack Leaning and Harry Finch were unbeaten on 54 and 42, respectively.

Yuzvendra Chahal and Aron Nijjar, who has signed on loan from Essex, made debuts as Kent barely resembled the side that lost by 321 runs at Trent Bridge in July.

However, the main talking point was the absence of club captain Sam Billings.

Although Billings had taken a break from red-ball cricket earlier in the season, Leaning remained captain and Finch retained the gloves.

Asitha Fernando made his debut for Nottinghamshire just 24 hours after arriving in the UK, finishing on 1-63.

Kent won the toss and opted to bat, putting on 95 after Crawley was put down at point by Dane Paterson in the second over.

Ben Compton, after one expansive early effort, ebbed his way to 18 before being bowled trying to reverse sweep Harrison four minutes before lunch by Crawley.

Almost 100 balls later, Crawley reached 150 when he pulled Fernando for one through fine leg before Harrison held on to a drive to end his innings.

Tawanda Muyeye hit the final delivery of the afternoon session for six to leave the hosts at tea on 260-3 when Bell-Drummond attempted to hook Fernando and was caught by Tom Moores acrobatically.

Leaning and Muyeye put on 59 for the next wicket, before the former was caught at slip by Harrison for 35.a
