The high-speed train hit railway workers in Italy on Wednesday night, killing at least five.

Italian news outlet Ansa reported that workers were replacing a track near Turin.

Brandizzo’s mayor, Paolo Bodoni, told local media that an investigation was underway.

Italian railway network (RFI) expressed its “deep sorrow” for the incident in a statement.

The RFI also expressed its condolences to the families of the deceased.

It was described by Mr Brandizzo as “chilling” and a “huge tragedy”.

An ambulance treated the train driver for shock at the scene, but otherwise he was unharmed. It is believed that two rail workers escaped unharmed.

Nearly 700 kilometres (434 miles) north of Rome, Turin is a city in northern Italy.
